SETTING
Functions:
  • allows story to progress
  • accomodates action
  • creates mood/ tone e.g pathetic fallacy
  • reflection of characters
  • context
  • reflects hierachy/society
  • 'so the characters have somewhere to be'

THE ROAD
Binary opposites:
1. The cellar- bodies stored, reflects society, horror/scary, decay, underneath ground-hidden away. Significant as only memorable part in book 
2. The bunker- food source, reflects society's decay- someone had saved for apocolypse, hope, safe, secure, underneath ground. STAY THERE

THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER
1. Hermit's Land- safety, structure, civilisation, religion, dedication/devotion
2. Sea- supernatural, silent, barren, isolated

PORPHYRIA'S LOVER
1. Inside- hidden away from society, warm/cosy, isolated, two lovers
2. Outside- windy/miserable weather, exposed to society, judging

GATSBY
 1. Gatsby's mansion- rich, wealth, american dream, 'world's fair', bootlegger
2. Wilson's garage- decay, valley of ashes, collapse, barren waste land, hard work, honesty
